Entertainment & The Arts
I’m a prize-winning fiction writer. My novel ‘Amsterdam Rampant’ was shortlisted for the 2012 Dundee International Book Prize (one of the world’s leading prizes for unpublished novels). I will self-publish the novel as an ebook in November, and I’m keen to source a striking and original cover design. Synopsis of the novel as follows: “There’s no place quite like Amsterdam for losing yourself, and Fin McPhail is one of the lost. It wasn’t supposed to end up like this. Amsterdam was going to be a fresh start away from all his problems back in Scotland. His new life started well enough, with a new job, big plans, and sobriety. But as winter tightened its grip, Fin reverted back to his old temptations, slowly edging into Amsterdam’s underworld... And now, not only is Fin being followed by a psychopath, but his old life is hurtling back towards him in the shape of a stag party – four reprobates from his hometown in Scotland, including his future brother-in-law and the former school bully – will arrive in the city this evening. With time running out, and nothing left to lose, he knows there is only one course of action left – do what’s right for his sister...” My goal was to write a book that would be uncompromising and riotously entertaining. Influences include: • WRITERS – Iain Banks, Irvine Welsh, Jonathan Franzen, Roddy Doyle, Charles Bukowski • MOVIES – In Bruges, Trainspotting, Stand By Me • TV – Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, Mad Men
What's your vision?
As it is an ebook cover, I only need the front cover (ie. no spine or back page). I have a specific vision for the cover, which is based on the Rene Magritte painting ‘Empire of Light.’ The painting portrays a surreal scene in which the upper half is day and the lower half night. My idea is to use a similar image for the cover – the upper half blue sky and a classic Amsterdam townhouse skyline during day; the lower half the red light district by night, dark and shadowy with neon reflections in the canal (feel free to portray or hint at the sleazy garishness of the red light district - sex shops, coffee shops, sex shows etc). I believe the right interpretation of this design will not only be striking but also accurately capture some of the themes of the book, exploring as it does the Jekyll and Hyde nature of the city by day and night. Capturing the look and feel of the city will be essential in the winning design. The design should show text as follows: the novel title (“Amsterdam Rampant”; largest font), author’s name (“Neil Cocker”; second largest font), and a strapline (“Shortlisted for the 2012 Dundee International Book Prize”; smallest font). Keep in mind that it should look good as a thumbnail image (but of course you experts already know this!)
