Fantasy for young adults (target is 14+)
What's your vision?
I'm looking for a cover for a young adult fantasy novel. Full front and back design is required. TITLE: Before the Dawn AUTHOR: J.L. McNaughton The first novel in a trilogy, Before the Dawn is an epic adventure about James, a shy 14 year old misfit who one day is pulled from his world, where he’s ignored, bullied and forgotten, into another world where he’s needed, celebrated and respected. Set in Terrain, a fantasy world similar to Earth but populated with mythical creatures and human-like Terrainians, Before the Dawn is part fantasy-adventure and part coming-of-age story – with great descriptive elements, original characters and a well-developed narrative – that follows James as he attains magical powers and combats the horrible menace of the Overseers. Along the way he meets wonderful new friends and quickly grows up to be a Master in his own right. For the cover, I visualize the hero and a female pixie who is lime green with brown pixie cut hair and two feet tall (no wings), holding hands (pretense of each protecting the other), walking down a path toward mountains in the distance. We would mostly see their backs or maybe a slight profile as they're walking away from the viewer. To the left and above the mountains would be 3 moons that could be connected together or slightly separated. To the right of the mountains and rising from the horizon would be a sunrise barely visible (thus the title Before the Dawn). Soft dark, with slight illumination from the dawn. Would welcome creative liberties ie barely distinguishable characters (outlines) or suggestive lurking shadows. See very rough attached diagram. The back cover should be compatible with this but there will be no text on it at this point, though that could be added by the publisher, Friesen Press, later.
This is the first in a trilogy, and there is a separate trilogy in the works, so there is the potential for more work. Branding will be important so having some commonalities that could appear on each cover of the trilogy would be important.
