What's your vision?
A cover for The Before by award-winning author Emily McKay. The book is a dystopian young adult novella and the prequel to The Farm and The Lair, both published with Berkley Publishing. The covers for those two books are included. We would like the cover to be similar in style and theme to The Farm and The Lair. While the other covers featured one girl, the protagonists are twin sisters so it's possible the cover could include two girls. Either way we are more interested in tone. We want that grim feeling that you get from The Farm. Haunting, would be a good word. Our favorite of the two covers was The Farm. We like the darker tone of that and the fact that the girl seemed to be a bit of a mystery. The cover itself had a more haunting tone. In this story the twin sisters have just learned of the attack on the US by vampires. They watch a lot of tv so one option would be a girl sort of entranced by the light from a TV. Another big turning point is toward the end when all the teens are gathered together to be taken to Farms. We could envision an outside scene with the two girls or a single girl and a car driving off in the distance. The book is currently being posted on Wattpad so excerpts could be read there for a sense of the story. The setting of the series is Texas and in one scene, the city of Houston is attacked so it's possible to also include a fiery city background. Most of the book takes place inside the home of the girls.
We are doing something unique here. The author and editors at Beyond the Page will choose the final 3-5 cover finalists. What we're planning to do is then put the finalists up on Wattpad where Emily is serializing The Before. We will do our best to give each finalist credit when the cover is posted on Wattpad. On Wattpad we're going to ask readers to vote on what their favorite cover is. The winner on Wattpad will be the design we choose. For that reason we're hoping to get some variety in what we see. We'd like to choose finalists who each have a unique and different look instead of variations of the same thing.
