Fictivity Press got their new book cover by running a design contest:
Create a compelling cover for a steampunk fantasy novel

Entertainment & The Arts
We arrange to have authors' manuscripts prepared for self-publication. For this project, the target audience is 18-45-year-old readers of steampunk, fantasy, and historical fiction. The story is set mostly in Victorian London and involves an alien demonic creature.
What's your vision?
We need a book cover designed for both ebook and print formats. The print book will be a 6x9 trade paperback, but we do not yet have a page count for spine width. The front cover will display the title "The Infernal Aether," and the author's name, "Peter Oxley" in a suitable font. We're looking for a steampunk feel (heavy on the steam, lighter on the punk!) that conveys action, mystery, suspense, and impending doom. One idea we have for the artwork would be adapted from a scene in the novel and would depict three rather dapper gentlemen approaching London's Royal Observatory near dusk as a demonic (not satanic) entity is making its presence known (as noted in the comments, this scene may be a bit too much to depict on a book cover).
A rough version of the original manuscript is available online at http://www.wattpad.com/story/6709337-the-infernal-aether-first-draft There is also a book trailer at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANKlWgzYOvU which might help in understanding the FEEL we are after. The attached file is a very early cover which also conveys some of the misty, old world feel we are shooting for.
