FIRST THINGS FIRST...PLEASE LEGITIMATELY READ WHAT WE WANT!! Some artists are submitting entries who apparently aren't and that's sad...
We wrote a novel called Strands of Sand, about a man and a woman stranded on a tropical island after a plane crash. We would like to have the cover with a beach scene (preferably a top-down view with waves crashing in from the ocean up top on the cover and the foam itself from the waves formulating the author name NANTEN) and "SOS" written in the sand in prominent, large letters organically, but the rest of the letters of "Strands of Sand" smaller beside each big letter of SOS.
We were thinking that the beach scene could wrap around the entire book including the spine (with the title and author name written in sand on the spine itself), and the synopsis of the book could be written in the sand on the back.
We would prefer NO STOCK PHOTOS (we are looking for strictly original and unique art for this piece) to be used, but otherwise we are open to any form of art and creativity in interpretation of our idea.
Also, if you'd like to incorporate the man and the woman in the piece, that is okay by us, as long as they are at the bottom of the cover and they are not stock photo cutouts. Once again, we are looking for *ORIGINAL ARTWORK* done for this book! We would need it to be in a 5.5" x 8.5" cover size all around.
We are desiring a special design that pops with colorful life, even as a thumbnail on Amazon. The type of cover that stands out with ingenuity and one-of-a-kind workmanship. The more creativity shown with what we're envisioning here will definitely peak our interest more so than that of someone casually winging it in Photoshop...
We need both a version for the ebook (front cover only), and a full cover version for the print edition (front cover + back and spine).
Here are the ebook image specs for Amazon.com KDP, which you should follow:
Kindle Direct Publishing accepts two types of files for cover images
JPEG, or .jpeg
TIFF, or .tif(f)
Requirements for the size of cover art:
--Ideal height/width ratio of 1.6
--For best quality, image should be 1563 pixels on the shortest side and 2500 pixels on the longest side.
--Cover image must be less than 50MB
Product images display on the Amazon website using RGB (red, green, blue) color mode. Remember that the cover should look good as a thumbnail, the book title and author name readable.
For the print edition, the back cover text will read:
A plane crash. An island. One man. One woman. Complete strangers. His journey, her journey, their journey. Together.
Size of print book will be 5.5" X 8.5"
Spine: We aren't yet sure of the page count, so let's estimate 200 pages. This means you should design the spine to be .4504" in width (200 multiplied by 0.002252); this will most likely have to be adjusted when we determine the final page count. Chances are that after all the extras (the copyright jargon, the TOC, etc) are put in place the final count will be in or around 210 pages total. So please keep that in mind while creating/designing.
The full cover will be delivered to the printer as a single PDF that includes the back cover, spine, and front cover as one image. (Flatten all layers in the native file.)
The printable area must be:
--Measured exactly to the book's trim size, spine width, and .125" bleed (bleed of .125” is required on all sides. The bleed at the bottom of the page must not exceed .125”; there should be no "live" elements within .25” of the trim lines.)
--Centered horizontally and vertically
--300 DPI image resolution recommended. Higher resolutions are acceptable.
Cover Width: Bleed + Back Cover Trim Size + Spine Width + Front Cover Trim Size + Bleed (in this case= 11.7004")
Cover Height: Bleed + Book Height Trim Size + Bleed (in this case= 8.75")
From the winning designer we would like a jpg of the front cover and a pdf of the full cover.
THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH for your time and for your effort!
