What's your vision?
We would like a design for the cover of the print version of a science fiction novel. The novel is set three thousand years in the future when there are many populated planets in the galaxy. There is some military action but it is primarily about the exploration of alien planets -- more "2001" than "Starship Troopers." The cover illustration should indicate the genre and suggest the exploration of space and other worlds. Combat elements (space battles etc.) aren't necessary. The attached pitch DOCX gives some idea of what the novel is about, although this text will be rewritten for the final version. One key planet which could be illustrated is the waterworld Keto -- it has green algae-stained seas, multiple hurricane-class storms at a time, and only a few island chains for land. On the dark side of the planet, there are both aurora and bioluminescent algae blooms visible. It has no moon or rings. It was "seeded" thousands of years in the past by the "White Seed" of the title, a miniaturized starship intended to recreate life from Earth using genetic information and nano-machines. The seed isn't described in detail in the book and could be illustrated in various ways. The novel will be published as a 220 page 6x9 inch trade paperback through Amazon Createspace. The cover must follow the attached template PNG generated by Amazon. It should be delivered as a PSD with layers for graphic elements, title/author, and the template (placed in the background, not visible but available to check alignment). The cover will include front, back, and spine. The bar code area can be left blank; Amazon will insert it. There should be title and author information on both the front page and vertically on the spine. The text size on the front cover should be large enough to be legible if the cover is thumb-nailed down to 100 pixels high, but it should still leave enough of the graphic visible to indicate the genre at that size. (Most online bookstore sites aggressively downsize cover images in listings and the design should still be distinct at that size.) The book is set using Adobe Trajan Sans Pro for titles. We have licensed Trajan Sans and it would work well for cover title/author text; various interesting text effects could be applied. (Note this is not the older Trajan Pro serif, but the newer sans-serif.) The body text of the book is Athelas, but no particular font is suggested or required for the back cover copy -- it just needs to be legible (at normal print size) and consistent with the rest of the design. Main text elements: Title: White Seed Author: Kenneth Marshall Secondary text elements: Series subtitle: Seed World One Publisher: New Athenian Category: Science fiction
I used the attached JPG as a wrap-around cover illustration for a proof of the novel. The image is licensed stock art. It could be used for the final version but I'm also open to other images as long as they are original or can be licensed at a reasonable cost. The attached pitch can be used for the back cover copy and gives some idea of what the novel is about. (It will be re-written in parallel to this contest, so make sure this is an editable layer in the PSD.) Note that the Amazon template is correct for 220 pages even though it says 214 -- they round the page count for some reason. The cover art needs to extend to the edge of the pink area to allow for printing variation. There is a distinct fold line not illustrated in the template about a half centimeter in from the front and back edge of the spine.

This is the second job I've done with Alexandre, "Portugal." This time I didn't do the contest--I knew I wanted Alexandre to do my second cover. He did not disappoint--it is exactly what I asked for and once again he used his expertise and creative eye to make things better than my original request. I also really love how it matches the first cover in a color/font scheme so it looks really professional. This was my first experience asking someone directly to do work and Alexandre was fast, professional, and a delight to work with. I can't recommend his services enough. He is really good at designing book covers!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
