Author of A Three-Turtle Summer
From the highway, the sign for the High Mountain Resort is so large it obscures the sight of most of the recreational vehicles that nestle around the pristine lake framed on one side by tall cliffs and on the other by old-growth fir trees. However, the reality is that a close-up look at the motor homes reveals a mish-mash of broken down units including trailers and campers of all sizes that are in such poor shape that they’re barely inhabitable. They are packed in so tightly that it is impossible to move them so they’re useless as transportation even if their engines work—and most of them don’t. Inside these wheeled domiciles live people who are just one step to the left of homeless—and they’re moving quickly toward that last step. A little white clapboard grocery store services the renters who are stuck too far from town to shop anywhere else. Across the lake are a few private homes (not important).
The renters are good people who have landed in this resort hell after working hard all their lives. Each one has made fatal last minute errors that has tumbled them into a poverty crueler than any of them deserve.
This book is about seniors who are living on the edge but it is not without humor.
There is no phone service to the trailers. The store has a phone line. This isn’t important—I’m just sayin’. The driveway is dirt.
I picked the covers above for their color, style, and font layots--I couldn't find any examples with old trailers.
