Subtitle. “Self-Help for Super Villains” is a fun, charismatic piece of short satirical fiction, combining aspects of mainstream comic books with the extravagant suppositions of a motivational self-help seminar. Written from the perspective of a Bill Masterson, a self-antagonistic motivational speaker dedicated to helping super criminals achieve peak performance, “Self-Help for Super Villains” delivers a series of motivational maxims intended to act as the impetus for the underachieving and underrepresented super villains of the world to reach their true destructive potential. Organization Name. FoeHammer Publications Target Audience. I am a hybrid author producing works using traditional and independent publishing methods. I produce works along a variety of genres to include science fiction, humor, and horror. The intent is to distribute Self-Help for Super Villains, a short humor piece, electronically at no cost to market and generate interest in my other works. I will produce a limited number of hardcopy editions of Self-Help for Super Villains for contributor copies and personal distribution. What's your vision?
Book Cover Design. The overall concept for the cover art is a super villain standing in front of a burning city holding a book entitled “Self-Help for Super Villains.” The specific villain that I’ve used for my concept art is Doctor Doom. However, for obvious copyright reasons, please make the character distinct enough from this Marvel Comics original. The character should have a maniacal / crazy smile on his face, and does not have to wear a mask. The book within a book image effect is achieve very easily by importing the completed image back into the original file multiple times. I’ve included the background image that I’ve used, but feel free to use a different image of chaos and destruction. I’ve include the website logo and ISBN code for the back cover. Font. The font that I’ve used for the concept art title and author name is Impact, bold and italics, with a thin black outline. The back cover text is impact font with a thin black outline. Feel free to select a different font. Text. The cover art text is the following: Front Cover: Self-Help for Super Villains Christopher Homes Nixon Back Cover: Self-Help for Super Villains “Deep within man dwell those slumbering powers, powers that would astonish him, that he never dreamed of possessing, forces that would revolutionize his life if aroused and put into action.” – Orison Swett Martin Twenty five years ago, Bill Masterson’s bitch wife left him. Ever since then, he’s worked as a motivational speaker and helped millions of people achieve the life advantage. Bill Masterson’s trade specialty includes helping antagonists, villains, and evil geniuses from around the world overcome their limiting beliefs to create the winning edge. His previous works include “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Criminal Masterminds,” “How to Win Battles and Intimidate People,” “Unleashing the Powers Within,” and most recently, “Self-Help for Super Villains. Bill Masterson enjoys self-improvement, exercise, long walks on the beach, and standing back to watch it all burn. For more works by Christopher Holmes Nixon, please visit www.foehammerpublications.com. Dimensions. The size of the book is Digest 5.5” x 8.5” cover. There needs to be a 0.125 bleed area around the edge, so the total size for the image will be 11.25” x 8.75”. There needs to be a 0.25” text safety area around the interior of the image. This is a short story, and 0.125” should be allocated for the book spine. There is no room / no need to include text along the spine. I’ve enclosed a sizing diagram to assist.
Communication. I acknowledge that not everyone who enters the contest will have English as there first language. Definitely no problems there, and all my previous contest winners were from outside North America. If you have trouble with English and reading the guidelines for my contest, Google Translate is a very fast and effective way to translate English into the language you are most comfortable using: https://translate.google.ca/ Contest Guarantee. I’ve guaranteed a winner immediately after initiating the contest. Feedback. I do not provide feedback for contest book cover submissions. The reason for this is I do not want anyone copying or imitating someone else’s previously submitted work. In addition, I don’t want to waste anyone’s time with needless changes or updates. Please give me your best work, and when the contest in over I will pick one winner to coordinate any final updates. Finalist. I will pick one finalist to work with for any final changes. I do not want to waste anyone’s time, and this buys lots of time for both the artist and myself to make any final amendments. This seems to work really well, and for my past contest we’ve completed the final product before the contest has even ended. Guidelines. In my contests, there seems to always be one obvious winner that stands out from the rest. Overall, I’m looking for quality, adherence to the above guidelines and concept art, and an overall coolness factor to pick the winner. If you feel that you have a good idea that diverges from the concept art that I’ve provided, by all means please use your own creative judgment for your submissions. Files. I’ve enclosed the following files to aid you with your submissions: Concept Art Concept Art with Comments and Notation Concept Art Power Point (if it is useful to you) ISBN Website Logo Cover Background (which you don’t have to use, but I’d like something similar) Ingramsparks File Creation Guide Front and Back Cover Text in MS Word Book Cover Dimension Chart Technical Specifications. If it helps to know which distribution company I employ, I use Ingramsparks for distributing my works. I’ve included their file submission guide which you can refer to if you have a very specific technical question about file formatting (page 16). Ingramsparks uses CMYK colorspace. Final File Submission. It will save me a lot of time if the final submitted products include the following: 1x Editable File (likely a Photoshop PSD file). 2x High Quality PDFs: One full cover PDF with ISBN, one PDF of just the front cover 2x High Quality JPEGs: One full cover JPEG with the ISBN, one JPEG of just the front cover File Hand-Over. If possible, please do not send Zip files for the file hand-over. This is not a deal breaker, but I cannot see what files you’ve included without blindly accepting your final file submission if the files are zipped. Overall. I’ve had great success using 99 designs, and it has become my standard for book cover artwork production. The people that I’ve worked with in the past seemed to have enjoyed working with me, and visa-versa. While I’m a decent writer and I’m good with Power Point, I can’t draw to save my life. I sincerely appreciate the time and effort for all the submissions that I receive. Finally, I am constantly producing new works, and will setup additional book cover creation contests in the near future. Questions. I’ve included as much detail about what I’m looking for as possible. However if there are any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
