I need a kick-ass dystopian book cover for CreateSpace and Kindle. This book is part of a series, so I am looking for a designer whom I can form a relationship with to design the rest of the book covers.
IDEAS FROM THE BOOK:
The book takes place in a primitive prison community in northern New Mexico. The setting can either be high desert (sagebrush as the primary foliage with mountains in the background) or high-altitude forest (think aspens, cottonwoods, coniferous trees, etc.)
The main character is a 25-year-old girl with hair that she wears in a braid. She has a blue heeler dog, but IF the cover depicts them, I would like them ONLY as silhouettes. No exceptions!!! She has a deep longing for freedom, loves the woods, and eventually escapes the prison.
I would prefer the title to be in a bold sans serif font that uses capital letters. Elements you may use in the design include razor wire, barbed wire, or a vector illustration of a bird with its wings outstretched. The bird is modeled after a tattoo that is a true-to-life illustration of a lark. These elements are not required, though. Feel free to be creative.
BRAND AND AESTHETIC:
Here is a look at my most successful series to date. I am NOT looking for someone to replicate these covers; this is only to get a feel for my author brand:
The general aesthetic I am after is slightly dark and dangerous but with a glimmer of hope. The world outside the prison has ended, but the characters don't know this until the end. The cover should lean more badass dystopian than soft and girly.
DIMENSIONS AND FILES:
The PDF print cover should be 5.5x8.5 inches. I do not have the exact spine width yet, but it will be close to .75 inches.
Ideal dimensions for JPEG files for the digital cover are 625 x 2500 pixels.
Title and author name on both the front cover and spine — Lawless By Tarah Benner — and book description on back cover.
DESCRIPTION FOR BACK COVER:
When Lark was sentenced to twenty-five years behind bars, she thought San Judas was her lucky break. The primitive 16,000-acre community in rural New Mexico isn’t like any other prison. There are no cells, there is no warden, and Mother Mercy is the law.
She didn’t realize she’d be fighting for survival on a daily basis — battling hunger, violent inmates, and Mother Mercy’s iron fist. Lark’s only friend is Bernie — an off-the-rails environmental activist doing time for arson — and a mysterious stranger who’s been sending her illicit messages from the men’s colony.
Lark never thought escaping San Judas was possible until a message in a bottle changes everything: The guards outside the walls are disappearing, and the world as they know it is coming to an end.
Thank you! I can't wait to see your designs!
