dkzelda got their new card or invitation by running a design contest:
Videogame Inspired Wedding design
Check out dkzelda's Card or invitation contest…
This is a wedding between two geeky gamers. We want to incorporate the symbols of our passion with the sophistication that comes with a wedding.
What's your vision?
We are looking to create a wedding invitation/save the date/stationary package for our big day. We don't necessarily require a different design for each piece, but simply three unique pieces: a main front design, a title box, and a border/corner design. These three designs will allow us to mix and match to get everything we need. In terms of style, we like to think geeky. Not 100% sophisticated and classy like a traditional wedding, but not cluttered/messy, not cheesy, not tacky like Zazzle or VistaPrint readymade/customizable ones. Ideally, we'd like to leave the style up to you, because I know some abstract ideas could turn out to be exactly what we're looking for. The only thing is, we want the video game aspect of the design to feel natural and at home in the wedding atmosphere. Not two separate ideas, but two ideas becoming one (not unlike a wedding itself). Here's what we've thought of, but you can change it up or create something completely different, so long as the design includes something related to one or all of the following: Zelda, blue/purple/yellow color scheme, and/or console gaming in general (think Nintendo, Playstation, Xbox, any generation. We're lifetime members, so to speak).
Attached are sample images of: triforce, royal crest (the yellow is the original, the one with sword/shield is a fanmade image), sample invite/set design with a title box, specific flower (orchid), and us. We are not asking for these images as-is, so if you'd like to adjust/change/stylize/play with/combine them, have fun. Here's the design set (3 pieces in total) we're looking for: 1. Front side of invite/RSVP/etc design - Full design, roughly squared in shape but not tied down by a square border/edge. Some ideas we had floating around: a. Triforce/royal crest, stylized in some way; b. 8-bit or stylized versions of us (with something gaming related happening) c. Floral piece, using blues and purples (including example flowers attached), incorporating some game design (inside the flowers? Each flower/bud is a graphic for a different game? Have fun) d. Logo using Royal Crest (or any Zelda/custom gaming symbol) and our initials (DKV) 2. Stylized box so we can put in the "title" of the card, will be incorporated into or below the Primary Design. a. If design is heavy, keep box/border light. Vice versa applies as well. b. If creating a logo instead of a larger design for the Primary design, maybe incorporating it as the top of the box would work? Then create a border that would match. 3. Back/border: Back side of invite/RSVP/etc (no words) a. Full border, or single/double corner design, leaving open space for the invitation/RSVP/etc wording to go. b. Play off primary design, whether it be a piece of or smaller version of the Primary design, or something different that still fits the look/feel and style of it. An idea of games we prefer more than others (if you'd like to stray from the crest): She loves: Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, Mario He loves: Halo, Borderlands, Final Fantasy 7

And then… they selected 2 winners!
We wanted a unique wedding design based around our favorite video games, and they hit the nail on the head with exactly what we wanted. Communications were very open, and they were willing to submit multiple entries and put in a lot of effort to get the design exactly right. Very quick turnaround with the final files, as well. Couldn't have asked for a better designer!!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
