I write about how the way an office space is designed can change the way people act and interact in it. I explain how the right design can increase relationships and collaboration, and how bad designs can isolate people by making it hard to interact with other team members.
What's your vision?
The posts and guides that are being created on the site, require diagrams and illustrations to help explain some of the concepts while also making them more fun to engage with. The purpose of this contest is to determine the right style for the diagrams/illustrations, which will then be used for ongoing future work. Many of the illustrations will be of office floorplans showing examples of how people move and behave in a space. The Contest: The contest is to create an open office floorplan (loosely based on the attached sketch) that demonstrates many of the components that will exist in future floorplans. The graphic should contain the following: - Different types of furniture (i.e desks, chairs, sofas, round tables, plants, coffee machine, water dispenser, tv screens etc) - Different static people (i.e sitting, standing etc) - 2 people moving through the space - Someone thinking - 2 people interacting - Dimensions - show a (made up) distance between two pieces of furniture Note: in the sketch, D is Desk, T is Table, S is Seating. You can use this as a starting point but expand the design as you see fit based on the criteria that the graphic should demonstrate. Design and Explanation Style: To help explain some of the concepts in the articles, there will be examples that show how these behaviors work in other places in life. The examples below are here to help give you some direction of the design and explanation style I resonate with. They are from future articles. Examples: The article on "The Empty Bus Effect" explains how people spread out when they go into large common spaces. The article compares this to being on an empty bus. If you are on an empty bus and someone sat on the other side, you wouldn't think anything of it, but if they sat next to you when the bus is full of empty seats you might think they were crazy. So here, the graphic is used to help people relate their experiences on the bus to when they are in an office. The illustration for this shows two scenarios and I have attached a version I made of it. I made them in Keynote as I like the constraints and general style. Another example of a graphic is from an article that explains how an office that is too quiet can be very distracting as any noise above a whisper can sound loud. I have attached a graphic that I made that shows how the low background noise means that a footstep or a keystroke or someone sipping on coffee can sound loud. Style: The designs should be flat where possible, simple, clean, modern, and a little playful. While they will be viewed by architects and designers, they shouldn't feel too corporate. Anyone should be able to look at the graphics and understand what is going on. Note: If you'd like to re-do the bus example to should how you would have done it, that would be great but it's not necessary and the main focus should be on the floor plan graphic.
As mentioned, this contest is to figure out the style and communication method for the graphics. Once the competition is finished, there will be future work to create graphics etc for the articles and guides.
