Dr. MDH needed a new illustration or graphics design and created a contest on 99designs.
A winner was selected from 45 designs submitted by 19 freelance designers.
This project is for a novel appealing to volunteers, world travelers, and those who enjoy fictional works set in South Asia.
Hello Artists!
I’ve recently completed my first novel and I'm looking for 5 incredible pieces of line art to accompany the text. Each piece of line art will occupy a full page in the book and will capture a unique scene from the novel. My novel is set in Nepal (primarily Kathmandu), and so each image (the people, the architecture, the environment) should be true and accurate to this country and/or city. All scenes should be drawn from a middle distance perspective, if possible, and the general tone or feel of the artwork should be “up beat” and “inspiring.”
The five scenes or images I would love to depict through line art include:
1. A bustling market scene in Kathmandu’s Durbar Square (note: please include at least one cycle-rickshaw with pedaler in this image)
2. A small group of people—two Western trekkers (one male, one female) and two Nepali porters (both male)—hiking to Everest Base Camp
3. A hot-air balloon sailing over the Kathmandu Valley (note: the hot-air balloon should have large “Buddha Eyes” emblazoned on it—please see accompanying image)
4. A pastoral scene of the mountainous Nepali countryside with traditional buildings, rice terraces, etc. (note: bonus points if you include a pipal tree!)
5. A scene from inside the Dharavi slums, in Bombay
I really love the line art in the Travelers’ Tales Nepal book, and I’ve included some sample images of this work to give you a better idea of what I’m looking for. I also really like the style of line art that appears on the boxes of Juniper Ridge Incense, and I’ve also included a few samples of this work with this project posting. If your artwork resembles something close to either of these examples, I will be very happy and grateful!
Thank you in advance for all your work on this project! I appreciate the incredible skill and talent that goes into creating beautiful line art, and I look forward to seeing what you come up with. Good luck!
Note: I am happy to answer any questions you have or clarify any aspect of this project.
**PROJECT UPDATE #1** (Apr. 20, 2014):
Hello Artists! Thank you for your contest feedback. This is my first 99Designs experience, and so I apologize for any lack of information I provided in my initial project brief. I would like to address all questions that I've received so far:
1. Project Reward: After considering the task at hand, I've decided to up the payment amount.
2. First Round: For this first round, please just submit 1 illustration of any of the 5 scenes I've described above. We'll move forward with the other designs based on that initial submission.
3. Book/Image Dimensions: I'm waiting for the final word on this, but the book will be published in both softcover and eBook format. I will report back with more info as soon as possible.
4. Black or White vs. Color: Black and white, please!
5. Vector File or Drawing on Paper: Drawing on paper, please!
Please do send any additional questions you might have my way! More info to come.

**PROJECT UPDATE #2** (Apr. 21, 2014):
A few artists have asked about book and image dimensions. The book will be 6x9, and the images (ideally) should be about 0.5 to 0.75 inches smaller than the trim size on all sides. I hope this info helps!
