This is a highly complex campaign on a European Communication which basically says we have to make European legislation fit, throw over board all unnecessary and byrocratic ballast and make it more understandable, user friendly, slimmer, etc. unfortunately the Commission includes in this unnecessary burden also social legislation and health&safety issues, which we as Trade Unions are not ok with... Now the first consequence of this new communication is that the health&safety agreement the haidressers signed between employers and trade unions on the use of chemical products, the Commission doesn't want to implement in European legislation... this will be the leverage of our campaign.
The RETHINK REFIT Campaign aims at supporting the right of social partners to conclude agreements that are then made legally binding by the EU in line with Art. 155 of the EU Treaty. UNI Europa, the ETUC, Belgian trade union confederations, and the Social Partners of the hairdressing sector, UNI Europa and Coiffure EU, engaged in a large Campaign to exert pressure on the EU Commission and European governments to revisit the REFIT approach. It is anti-social and represents a strong attack on the autonomy and rights of social partners to engage in meaningful social dialogue.
We want to expose the fact that REFIT is actually about social deregulation, challenging and threatening the autonomy of the social partners, dismantling occupational health and safety protection for workers and information and consultation rights.
This has to be stopped. Pressure must also be exerted at national level. UNI Europa, in its campaign against REFIT, demands that affiliates contact their governments to try to influence their positions.
We are planing to have 3-4 different cartoons illustrating the topic of the campaign and look for somebody who would like to work together with us. The deadlines will be quite taff as we want to have produced the first materials by mid March...
