Community & Non-Profit
Shades of Yellow (SOY) is a Hmong Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer (LGBTQ) nonprofit organization that works to provide support, education, advocacy, and leadership development to Hmong LGBTQ and allies. SOY is made up of a diverse group of community members, constituents, and allies. We are committed to creating a community that is aware of the issues that Hmong LGBTQ face. We are based out of St. Paul, MN. SOY is unique in that we are the only known Hmong LGBTQ Organization in the world, so we make an effort to not only have local programming and support services, but to also have an online presence to reach out to other Hmong LGBTQ across the country and internationally.
Logo types to explore
You can get a sense of us from our website: www.shadesofyellow.org. We want our logo to embody the complex intersections we represent: We are deeply proud of our Hmong heritage. As an ethnic minority group without a country of our own and a refugee history, we have been historically oppressed but continue to thrive. Then as queer Hmong folks, we are minorities within a minority within a minority. We are also proud to be queer, but want our logo to balance traditional Hmong culture with modernity, and the fabulous, fierceness of being QUEER! When you look at our logo we want you to see that we are clearly a Hmong organization and clearly a QUEER organization. We'd love to see some incorporation of traditional Hmong elements and designs (here's an example: http://www.cvmuseum.com/HmongClothing.gif ) but with a modern, queer twist. We like our original logo, which is a traditional Hmong male's hat, but with rainbow colors. However, we want to be gender neutral and gender inclusive, therefore we want to move away from the male hat and create a new logo.
