Third Factor Magazine got their new logo design by running a design contest:
Phoenix Logo for Creative+Intellectual Growth Magazine

Entertainment & The Arts
We are a magazine focused on growth and development for intense, creative, and intellectually curious people. Our content explores growth via "Intellect, Imagination, and Emotion" (which is another catch phrase we may use at times). Our readers span both sexes and all ages. "Sophisticated but quirky" works as a quick description. Please take a quick look at our content at www.thirdfactor.org to get a sense of who we are.
Other color requirements
Please use teal and orange in the logo. These are our brand's defining colors. At the moment, we use teal #12a7bf and orange #ff6b23, but for our new layout, we might try darkening them to a deep-water teal (roughly, #0b7586) and a burnt sienna (roughly, #b53b00), so feel free to adjust them in that direction. You could also add one more accent color. I'm thinking navy or indigo in the bird, but use your judgment. What I have in mind is a teal phoenix over a backdrop of orange flame. I'm pretty sure that's what I want, but you're welcome to surprise us with a new idea, too, based on your creative expertise. UPDATE: * We like designs that aren't totally flat. Shading to suggest depth is good. * Give the bird a sense of motion! * Don't just use a centered bird with wings out. This is what I'm calling "heraldry." Something that looks more unusual, perhaps from a 3/4 angle view, is what I'm looking for. * More literal than abstract turns out to be what we're looking for. I only realized tat after seeing a lot of samples, but I've adjusted the style attributes accordingly.
We want a phoenix logo to symbolize growth. I'm envisioning the bird flying upward, with a flame in the background. We'd like it to look confident, bold, and uplifting. We are seeking this logo as part of an overall site redesign. We will use this logo as an anchor for the new WordPress theme. We think it be a smallish graphic at the top of a website, but aren't certain yet. UPDATED TO ADD, 9/3 9:00 AM US EDT: Please focus your efforts mainly on the bird/flame. We may end up cutting the motto entirely, and might cut and move the title. On that note, it's possible that we will come back to the designer after the layout is done and request some minor modifications to fit our new layout (i.e., adding or subtracting text of the motto). There's also a possibility that we'd pay you for additional projects going forward that build on this one (i.e., transforming this logo into a T-shirt version, or making supplemental site illustrations). UPDATED TO ADD, 9/2 4:00 PM US EDT: This logo will be in the header of our website. It could be a square, or it could be a longer horizontal (landscape) image, if that works for your vision. A graphic that could be adjusted based on the needs of the layout in this respect will get extra points.

Zivana has been a pleasure to work with. Offered lots of different prototype designs early in the contest, and then offered many variations on the ones we liked. Great sense of color and general design skills. Thank you!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
