Mattmartindale got their new app design by running a design contest:
Show Pony Studios needs an eye-catching UI and Icon for a GHOST DETECTOR iPhone app!

Show Pony Studios is a team of two iPhone developers with a concentration on Entertainment and Game apps for iPhone.
What's your vision?
Show Pony Studios is releasing a new iPhone app with the working title "Ghost Detector". This will be an augmented reality iPhone application that overlays ghost animations over the iPhone's camera view to give the impression that there are ghosts walking amongst us that this app can detect. We will need 3 assets for this contest: 1) Main Screen UI - Main screen will have a large transparent viewing area that will represent the output from the iPhone's camera. This is where the ghosts will appear (ghosts already created by us). This design should look and feel like an industrial piece of art-deco equipment. It should have vacuum tubes, gauges, and knobs, but it should also have some style to it, just like the inspirational images provided. The app will have two states: On and Off. When the app is "off", the screen just shows the camera's view. When the app is turned "on", the on/off button turns into an arrow that points to the ghost, and the ghost will be displayed on the screen when you're pointing at him. The app also needs an "info" button that will rotate the view to display the second view. 2) Info Screen UI - The Info screen will be used provide promotional and feedback links (twitter, Facebook), as well as copyright information. It should have the same textures used in the main screen, and when you transition from the main screen to the info screen, it will feel as if the ghost detector device has been rotated, and you're now looking at the back of it. 3) App Icon - Feel free to be creative with the iPhone icons. I'd like to tease the idea that you can see ghosts with this app without actually showing any of the ghosts. No text, please.
The UI Mockup is provided as a starting point to the designers. Feel free to add flare and creativity where you see fit. Take the included inspirational images and run with them. The "Ghost Detector" device should feel industrial, but it should also have style as in the case of the inspirational images.
