The organization producing the play is Casa Valentina but the product and its target audience should reach the entire community as this is a fundraiser and the performers will come from all walks of life.
Casa Valentina is an affordable housing and life skills program for youth who have aged out of foster care in Miami-Dade County. We offer our clients fully furnished, comfortable apartments in safe neighborhoods located close to public transportation; intensive case management; academic and career planning support; help accessing services (such as health and dental care); and life-skills training. Casa Valentina serves young women, young men, and young mothers in three separate programs; we opened our doors in 2006.
WHO WE ARE
Casa Valentina addresses the immense challenges faced by young people in Miami-Dade County who age out of foster care at age 18 and have nowhere to go, no permanent family or home.
WHAT WE DO
Our mission is to provide former foster care and at-risk youngsters with safe, affordable housing and comprehensive services, including academic and career planning, financial education, and personal development skills they need to become confident and successful independent adults. Over 140 young people have come through our doors and gained the confidence and life skills they needed to succeed.
WHY WE DO IT
A foster child’s 18th birthday often triggers a descent into a life of homelessness, unemployment, substance abuse, criminal behavior and a cycle of desperation. Housing is the greatest need. One third of Florida’s foster children are likely to become homeless within 3 years of aging out. Over 50% are still attending high school - with only a small State stipend and a bus pass, and nowhere to turn.
