By entering this competition you agree that Allen & Unwin can display your design on our Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr sites.
What's your vision?
Welcome to Allen & Unwin's design adventure/challenge. The following may seem like a lot of information, but please read to the end because it’s important so that you don’t waste your time designing something that doesn’t fulfil the brief. Are you a talented designer who would like to work on book covers? Are you open to new and creative ideas? Does designing covers for Australia’s leading independent publishing house interest you? If your answers are yes, yes, and yes, Allen & Unwin invites you to read on. Allen & Unwin is publishing an extraordinary novel next year for which we need a brilliant, creative cover that hits the market. And how much more interesting for us all to watch its development here, on 99designs, with you. We're interested in seeing your roughs for the cover of the book described below. If we love your cover direction, we'll work with you to bring the cover to fruition. We need to see your roughs by Tuesday, 8 November 2011. The novel is called ALBERT OF ADELAIDE Take note: even though it sounds like it is a book for children, it is a book aimed at an adult, mostly female market. The tricky part of this assignment is that the main character is a walking, talking platypus whose best friend turns out to be a pyromaniac wombat. WHAT DO WE WANT? • A warm-hearted, perhaps whimsical approach to a cover design—clever enough to be a book about talking animals without looking like a book for children • We want strong typography • We're not looking for a literal representation of a platypus, wombat or dingo on the front cover OUR BRIEF: • FORMAT: B format hardback • DIMENSIONS: height 198 mm x width 128 mm • For this first stage of the competition, please design only the front cover. The winning designer will then work with A&U to finalise front and back jacket design, flaps and spine • [Title] Albert of Adelaide [Author] Howard L. Anderson [Shoutline] A wholly delightful, old-fashioned novel about friendship and loyalty • Please use Linotype fonts; preferably design in InDesign; provide CMYK files • Embellishments available: matt or gloss laminate, spot UV, embossing and foil • The winning designer will receive a fee of $1000 and the opportunity to work with A&U to complete the jacket for Albert of Adelaide • If A&U deem that it's not possible to work with any of the entries, no fee will be awarded • All illustrations and design are commissioned for use in this edition and any subsequent reprints or further editions and formats of this title and for copying under statutory licences and other forms of copying of the book. Illustrations and design may also be used in catalogues or on publicity/promotional material. Here is a description of the novel: ALBERT OF ADELAIDE It’s a wholly delightful, old-fashioned novel about friendship and loyalty, about what makes a hero. Unusually, the hero-in-the-making is a duck-billed platypus called Albert who has escaped from a zoo in Adelaide to go in search of the ‘old Australia’—somewhere in the desert, north of Adelaide, a Promised Land that he’s heard so much about from other animals. When we meet him he is four days north of Alice Springs. Albert has no idea where he’s going and carries nothing other than an old soft drink bottle. If he doesn't find water fast, he’s going to be in all sorts of trouble. He starts to hallucinate about his childhood home by the Murray River and is no longer sure whether he is heading north. When all seems lost, he comes across a wombat by a campfire who offers him a cup of tea. And so begins Albert’s adventures, during which he meets some drunk, wise-cracking camp bandicoots (Roger and Alvin), escapes from a burning hotel (set alight by the pyromaniac wombat Jack) after a very lucky streak at two-up, and runs for his life from some dingoes. WHO IS THIS BOOK FOR? It’s for readers who love heartwarming tales; It’s for readers who are happy to suspend disbelief and follow Albert’s rather innocent journey to find, within himself, the best platypus he can be. The target market is 35+ women. WHAT BOOKS HAS THE TARGET READER READ?
