Here's my design concept for your brief. I go with this stitch concept because I think the stitching activity very much similar to DIY. As in stitching, in DIY we combine ideas in to one brand new creation. We stitch the idea. Also, stitching is common or familiar in DIY process. I designed the logo so to have the style attribute as you set in the brief.
