Entertainment & The Arts
uCharts.com is a Streaming Music Video service, with a emphasis on shared playlists and community driven music charts. Users can create collaborative playlists that friends can contribute to. In addition to playlists are the global charts which show the all time rankings of videos that have been either added to playlists, or liked and disliked by other users.
The key feature that we want to achieve is a completely fluid layout, with a single theme for both desktop and mobile. This means having nice large menus and buttons, that can easily be pressed with a finger, but also look ok on desktop. We also want the social sharing functions to be very prominent, and easy to use. These include the ability to share an individual song or a playlist on Twitter, Facebook, or by email/link. The current site is also quite dark, and we are open to lighter colours if they look sharp. All existing buttons, fonts, logos, menus and icons should be replaced.
We have been busy building the rankings engine and basic functionality of this site, now it is up to you to make it look good! Take a look at the attached images, which correspond with the 5 different pages below (note there is a desktop and mobile version for each one). 1. Homepage - we want the main page to consist of a number of buttons or 'tabs' that will function as shortcuts to user playlists, or global charts. These can be customised by the user to suit their needs. 2. Menu - This menu is a drop-down overlay, that directs users to playlists or the various global chart options. Feel free to play with the layout, colours, even the menu options, if you think you can make it more user friendly. 3. Player & Queue - this is the core output of the site, displaying the currently playing video and the queue of videos beneath it. We believe that the current layout of having the player prominent on the screen and a horizontal queue underneath it is the best solution for desktop and mobile, but we are open to radical changes if you can make it work. 4. Playlist Menu - this is the playlist editing screen, which has a number of functions. From here a playlist can be edited, shared, deleted, cloned, or played. We want this screen to look a lot sharper, while keeping all of the same functions. The sharing functions also need to be prominent. 5. Search Results - this screen could look and function a lot better. Take inspiration from Grooveshark. We want to fit more results on screen, and display more data about the search results. Video thumbnails need to remain however. Also include the on-click options (the menu that appears after you click a search result). Keep in mind that all pages above need to easily operate on desktop and mobile, which means fluids layouts and nice big buttons that are easy to press.
What to avoid
Small buttons that would be difficult to press on a mobile device.
uCharts has a number of unique features which need to be retained in the new design. Please spend some time using the site to familiarise yourself with the following functions: 1. Create and watch playlists of music videos. 2. The ability to share playlists and have other people edit them. 3. Search for videos and either play them, share them, add them to a playlist, like, or dislike them. 4. View Global Charts - Global Charts represent the accumulated totals of all songs that have been added to playlists, or liked or dislike (each addition of a song to a playlist counts as a positive vote for that song). 5. Global Charts have a number of sorting options: a) Genre - show highest ranked songs from a particular genre. b) Count - have songs run in ascending or descending rank order. c) Date - show songs voted this day, week, month, custom. d) Number - number of songs to load in the queue. e) Playlist Type - show the most recently voted, most played, or highest ranked. f) Play Direction - have the queue count up or count down, ie. 1-1- or 10-1. We know that not all of these features are easy to find, so we are hoping for a design that will make these easier to use.
