Tim Brauhn got their new web page design by running a design contest:
99nonprofits: Refresh the web design for a groovy humanitarian agency

Community & Non-Profit
The 1010 Project is a humanitarian agency based in Denver, Colorado. We partner with business and community leaders to break the cycle of poverty in Kenya. Through education and training, we help prepare social entrepreneurs to build businesses based on the Triple Bottom Line (People, Planet, Profits).
Our home page is in dire need of a refresh. We don't currently have a footer, for instance. This will be the landing and focus page for our nonprofit, The 1010 Project. It should highlight some of our spectacular photos from Kenya as well as provide easy access to sub-sections detailing our work, partners, staff, and other programs. Buttons for a Donation page and an e-newsletter signup must also be present. In short, the basic functionality of the homepage stays the same, albeit with some shuffled-around elements (detailed in attached documents), but the overall design will be updated with an eye to navigation and TOTALLY FRESH STYLE, yo. :)
What to avoid
We don't want the page to scream "AFRICA!" Even though we work in Kenya, our programs do extend to the United States and a lot of our networking happens internationally. Avoid being wildly explicit towards an "African" look. I can't give an example of this on the web at this time. Use your best judgement and please ask questions if you'd like!
Our current logo is also in the process of a redesign, so please include it where necessary, but we're not 100% attached to it. As a corollary, if you're feeling frisky and want to design a new one, go ahead and paste it in! :) As listed in the "websites we like" section, Al Jazeera's top right corner has a dynamic image/text space. We'd like to perhaps employ this space in the same way for future events, blog posts, and features. If that means moving the social icons on my terrible mockup to another location, so be it. Navbar items/titles are not set in stone, and we may need to add one as we're fleshing out our desired sitemap. Besides our logo, we've uploaded a bunch of photos to use in the design if you'd like, but the two most important files are named "mockup". Thank you!
